ITALY RED PREVAILS AT THE MARINA YACHTING SARDINIA CUP
DOUBLE VICTORY FOR BREEZE AND EVOLUTION
MASCALZONE LATINO & CO. AND BLUE STORM LEAD IN SMALL-CRAFT CATEGORY

Porto Cervo, 19th September 1998

After six completed regattas in the Marina Yachting Sardinia Cup, Italy Red, formed by Breeze (Paolo Gaia - Tommaso Chieffi), Brava Q8 (Pasquale Landolfi - Tom Dodson) and Blue Storm (Gualberto Gualtieri - Luca Santella) now enjoys a comfortable lead.

The Italian team, with a total of 33 points, maintains a 15 points advantage over North Sea, formed by Rubin XV (H.O. Schumann - Jens Christensen), Mean Machine (Peter de Ridder - Bouwe Bekking), Aero Sail 3 (Detiev van der Goltz - Andrea Willim) and Sardinia, sailing with Vincenzo Onorato’s three boats: Moby Lines 49, Moby Lines 36 and Mascalzone Latino & Co.

Two technical 10 mile trials were sailed today amidst 8 to 10 knots north-easterly winds. The first regatta got off to a start at 11:50 a.m. The large-boat category was headed by Breeze (Italy Red) in first place, followed by the Spanish Bribon (Josè Cusi - Pedro Campos) and by the Argentinian maxi Alexia (Alberto Roemmers - Guillermo Parada).

Among the medium-sized craft, the Argentinian Evolution (Jean Treyvaud - Thierry Peponnet) came in first place, just barely edging out Brava Q8 (Italy Red: Pasquale Landolfi - Tom Dodson, enjoying Paul Cayard’s company on board, here in Porto Cervo to receive an award from Q8 Petroleum for his victory in the Whitbread). Winterthur Yah Man (Italy Green: Vittorio Rava - Lorenzo Bressani) finished in third place today.

The Sardinian team Mascalzone Latino & Co. (Onorato / Parente - Roberto Pardini) again came in first among the small boats. Arriving in second today was Malinda (Italy Green: Massimo Mezzaroma - Antonio Sodo Migliori), while Blue Storm (Italy Red: Gualberto Gualtieri - Luca Santella) registered a third-place finish.

The second regatta began at 2:55; again, Breeze (Italy Red) prevailed among the large craft, besting Rubin XV (North Sea) and Bribon (Spain). In the medium-sized category, Evolution (Argentina) enjoyed its second win, followed by Cavale Bleue (France One: Michel Duquenne - Peir Mas) and by Mean Machine (North Sea). Blue Storm (Italy Red) triumphed among the small boats, with Mascalzone Latino & Co. (Sardinia) and Malinda (Italy Green) finishing in second and third places respectively.

In the latter trial, the Race Committee disqualified teams left and right, excluding five boats from the trial for starting early: Alexia (Argentina), Costa Azahar (Spain), Osama (Malta), Okyalos X (Greece) and Eclipse (Argentina).

Tomorrow’s programme includes the final regatta of the Marina Yachting Sardinia Cup, scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. The closing and awards ceremonies will take place the same evening, at around 6:00. For updated information, visit www.sardiniacup.com, produced by After or call (+39) 078994269.
