32-MILE OFFSHORE REGATTA TODAY

Porto Cervo, 20th September 1998

The Marina Yachting Sardinia Cup, the trophy for national teams established in 1978 by His Highness Aga Khan, concluded today in Porto Cervo. The regatta, held every two years, is organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Italy had cause to celebrate today, winning with the Milanese Paolo Gaia’s Farr 49 Breeze, with Tommaso Chieffi at the helm, the Neapolitan Pasquale Landolfi’s ILC 40 BravaQ8, commanded by New Zealander Tom Dodson and Gualberto Gualtieri’s ILC 30 Blue Storm, with the Tuscan Luca Santella at the helm. This marks the second consecutive win for Gaia and Landolfi, who won the 1996 edition as well with the help of Rinaldo Del Bono’s Capricorno, substituted this year by Blue Storm. This brings Landolfi’s triumphs to a total of five in 11 editions of the Cup.

Celebrating a second-place finish was North Sea’s line-up, composed of Rubin XV (Schumann), Mean Machine (De Ridder) and Aero Sail 3 (Van der Goltz). The other competing Italian team finished third, made up of Ernesto Gismondi’s Wally 65 Edimetra, with Mauro Pelaschier at the rudder, the newly christened Italian champion Winterthur Yah Man (Italy Green), commanded by Milano’s Vittorio Rava and Trieste’s Lorenzo Bressani and the Roman shipowner Massimo Mezzaroma’s Malinda Kind of Blue, with Antonio Sodo Migliori at the helm.

A 32-mile offshore regatta was run today; Breeze (Italy Red) proved itself the fastest in the large-boat category, followed by Rubin XV (Germany) and Bribon (Spain). Among the medium-sized craft, Costa Azahar (Spain) came in first, with the newly christened Italian champion Winterthur Yah Man (Italy Green) registering second, followed by Mean Machine (North Sea). Blue Storm (Italy Red) bested its competitors in the small-boat category, while Malinda Kind of Blue (Italy Green) registered second place, followed by the Genevose Piergiorgio Ravaioni’s Tamoil Lady X Lady, sailing under the colours of Malta.

And thus another edition of the Marina Yachting Sardinia Cup draws to a close. This year, 11 teams representing nine different nations (Italy, France, England, Spain, Malta, Germany, Holland, Argentina, Greece) competed in a total of seven regattas. The 12th edition will take place in the year 2000, again off the shores of Porto Cervo.
