PRESS RELEASE

Speed record on sailing yachts on the course Montecarlo - Porto Cervo

New Course for World Sailing Speed Record: Monaco to Porto Cervo.

The Monaco Yacht Club and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda have introduced a new speed record for monohulls between Monaco and Porto Cervo. This will be known as the Wally Record and is ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council of the ISAF (International Sailing Federation). The 1999-2001 WSSR Rules will govern all attempts.

The course is 185 nautical miles when leaving the island of Corsica to Port.

The starting and finishing lines will be defined by transits as follows.
The starting line in Monaco will be the transit of the control tower of the heliport and a point half a mile due South of the tower.
The finishing line in Porto Cervo will be along a transit of the observatory and Li Nibani lighthouse.

The registration for record attempts should be made through the Yacht Club de Monaco 10 days in advance in order that the start and finish lines will have the appropriate controls. In accordance with Rule 13 of the WSSR an application and ratification fee of GBP750 will be payable at the notification. The ratification portion of this is GBP250 and will be returned if the attempt is unsuccessful, abandoned or time expired. By way of honouring the first attempt to set this record, the Monaco Yacht Club and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will jointly pay the fee for the first entrant.

The Wally Record will be awarded for the fastest time set. The trophy will be displayed at either of the two Yacht Clubs. Each Yacht Club will also display a board with the successive record breakers and their times inscribed for posterity. A cup will be awarded to the owner/skipper of the yacht.
